From the moment Gerry Sternberg stepped onto the turf at Varsity Stadium for his first Varsity Blues football training camp in 1962, people knew he was going to be a star. Described as a hard-nosed and sometimes deceptive player, it was his ability to play both Defensive Halfback and Running Back that made Gerry such a threat. In fact he was named OUAA All-Star at both positions in recognition of his play in the 1963 season.
Never a physically large player, Gerry's assets were his speed and intelligence on the field. His OUAA All-Star performance in 1965 helped the Blues capture the Yates Cup followed by winning the first Vanier Cup the same year. He the named the MVP of that game. Gerry developed his playing skills with the Blues and graduated to the professional ranks with the Edmonton Eskimos in 1965. In total, he played seven years of professional football with Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto and Hamilton including a Grey Cup victory in 1972, while earning a law degree at Osgoode Hall.
After his football career, Gerry turned back to his previous love, basketball. He represented Canada in the 1994 World Master Games winning a silver medal and again won silver in the Maccabian Games in Israel.
