Gerald “Ged” Hall Clawson was on the Varsity swim team four years from 1937 through 1941 and participated on three championship teams. He set the 200-yd breaststroke record, earned three first colours and was awarded his Bronze T in 1939. Ged enjoyed many outstanding sporting seasons including 1940, when he was named the recipient of the Neil Buckley Memorial Trophy as winner of the annual McGill-University of Toronto 100-yd freestyle competition and the T.H. Bickle Award winner as Varsity swimming MVP. A successful member of the 1936 Olympic team, Ged participated in the 200-m breaststroke event, placing second in his first round heat and eighth in the semifinals. Ged was also active in intramural sports at U of T, winning the Durnan Trophy for outstanding university swimmer four consecutive years (1937-41), six gold and five silver medals, as well as two indoor track events. Ged was a Lieutenant in the Irish Regiment of Canada during World War II, and he was awarded a military cross for clearing a mine field.
