Casey Baldwin received the first UofT "First Colour" in athletics when the award was instituted in 1905. He was captain of the cricket team in 1904 and then captain of the intercollegiate football champions in the fall of 1905. He was also active in Baseball, Fencing and Golf. Baldwin is regarded as a pioneer in Canadian aviation, and together with Alexander Graham Bell, in 1908 he invented the aileron, the wing flaps which provide lateral stability and maneuverability to airplanes. He set many Canadian flying records and also held several patents in the development of hydroplanes.
