Elizabeth Mortimer was intercollegiate breaststroke champion in 1939 but then all competition was suspended during the war and she served in the UofT Women's Service Training Detachment, earning the Canada Honour Award in 1942. From 1946-49, she competed with distinction in numerous armed forces swim meets in England, Austria, Nova Scotia, and many years later was active in Masters Swimming programs. While at UofT, she competed in intramural Basketball and Ice Hockey, and served on the Women's Athletic Directorate.
She joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1961 and was appointed Professor of Biomechanics in the Department of Physical Education in 1971. She is a specialist in body mechanics and her research has been utilized by NFL soccer-style kickers to achieve greater distance and accuracy.
