An outstanding forward and defensemen, “Red” Stephen represented U of T as a member of the Hockey Blues for a record of eight consecutive seasons, between 1951-52 through 1958-59. He was awarded eight First Colours, and served as captain of the team for a record of four times between 1953-54 and 1956-57, including the three consecutive championship teams in 1954-55, 1955-56 and 1956-57. “Red” was also a key member of the league championship team s in 1957-58 and 1958-59. His leadership on the ice extended to his leadership service on the Men’s Athletic Directorate in 1954-55 and 1955-56. “Red” was an assistant trainer with the Football Blues from 1953-58 and later served as an assistant coach for several years in the 1960’s under Coach Tom Watt. A versatile athlete, he was a member of three consecutive intramural Lacrosse championship teams at University College from 1952-53 through 1954-55. One of the most colourful and popular players in Blues history, he was honoured with a special “Red Stephen Night” in December 1958.
