Dave West was a driving force as a guard with the basketball Varsity Blues from 1960-65. During his four-year playing career, Dave continually set scoring records and led the Blues to the intercollegiate title in 1963-64 and 1964-65. He set a new career scoring title with 981 points in regular season games. His consistent play earned him a place on the provincial first-team all-stars three consecutive seasons from 1962-65, and three W. A. Potter Awards as team MVP in the same years.
Dave's athletic participation earned a place on the Varsity Blues football squad of 1964, although an injury prevented him from competition. He was also a member of the 1961 and 1962 Mulock Cup championship teams from Victoria College.
A team captain, Dave was awarded the George M. Biggs Trophy in 1965 for his leadership, sportsmanship and performance. In 1965, his
graduation year, he also joined the Canadian Men's Basketball Team for a tour of South America. The following year, Dave was a member of the Pan-American Games team and began a teaching career that would span more than thirty years.
As a teacher and coach at Martingrove Collegiate in Toronto, Dave
guided his teams to a Metro Championship and two provincial medals. In 1991 he became the head coach of the Centennial College basketball team.
