Dave Bailey started his successful track and field career at an early age. At 17 he set the world mile record (4:07.5) for his age category. Then on June 11, 1966, Dave became the first Canadian to run the one mile under 4 minutes, as he posted a time of 3:59.1 at San Diego. U of T fans enjoyed watching Dave when he became a member of the Varsity Track team between 1964 and 1967. In 1965, as captain, Dave won both the one mile and one mile relay at the OUA championships. In 1966, Dave won the one mile for a second year in a row and also won the 3 mile. In 1967, as captain once again, Dave won the 880 yards and the one mile relay. In 1965, 1966, and 1967, Dave was also a member of the three-time champion Cross Country team that won both the OUAA and CIAU team titles. He won the CIAU individual Cross-Country Championships in 1966 and 1967. Dave set a Canadian mile record in 1967 at the Toronto Police Games, finishing in 3:57.7. He competed in the 1965 FISU World University Games and won a Silver Medal in 1967. Dave participated in the 1966 Commonwealth Games, earned a Bronze Medal in the 1967 Pan-American Games, and competed in the 1968 Olympics.
