The Canadian record-holder for many years in the 100m Butterfly, Dan Thompson was undefeated in this event in 5 years of OUAA and CIAU competition. He earned a total of 12 CIAU Gold Medals and was CIAU Swimmer of the Year in 1980, winning Gold Medals in each of his 5 races. In 1980, Thompson was the first recipient of the T-Holders' Award as UofT's Male Athlete of the Year.

In 1983, he tied the world short-course record (53.17seconds) in the 100m Butterfly and set the Canadian and Commonwealth long-course records in this event. During his career, Thompson set 14 Butterfly records: 8 Canadian open, 3 Commonwealth, 3 Commonwealth Games. His international accomplishments include the 1977 World Student Games (2 Silver Medals), 1979 Pan-Am Games (2 Silver Medals), 1978 Commonwealth Games (2 Gold Medals) and 1982 Commonwealth Games (1 Gold Medal).

Thompson was national team captain from 1978-81, captain of the 1980 Olympic team, Board member of the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association and for several years an athletes' representative on the Board of the Canadian Olympic Association. He is a sports marketing executive in Toronto.
