Bob Masterson's incredible coaching career at U of T crossed two sports and spanned the years of 1947-1956.
Bob was a U.S. College All-Star football player and went on to a professional career with the Washington Redskins, where he captained the team in 1942 and 1943 and was selected an All-Star end for those years. During his six seasons with the Redskins, he was a member of four National Football League championship teams. A truly versatile and talented athlete, in 1946 he went on to play and serve as an assistant coach of the New York Yankees in major league baseball.
Bob arrived at U of T as an assistant coach in 1947 and became head coach in 1948, winning the Yates Cup championship in his first season. Under his leadership, the Varsity Blues repeated as Yates Cup winners in 1951 and 1954. Bob’s overall coaching record with the Blues football team was 41 wins, 4 ties and 18 losses, and he played an active role on the rules committee for intercollegiate football during his career.
In 1956, Bob accepted a position with the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL, thus bringing to an end his successful time in Toronto, but leaving a legacy of coaching excellence in his wake.
