It was not just another golden year for the Blues. The incredible team of athletes who made up the women's swimming and diving team of 1979-80 fought hard all season to prove they were the best university level swimming and diving program in the country.
And they did exactly that.
After a solid victory at the OWIAA championships, the swimmers and divers were off to Laval in search of the CIAU national title. They did not disappoint. In fact, they blew the competition out of the water, literally, tallying a total of 385 points in the pool and off the boards over the course of the meet. The runner up, Dalhousie, managed only 199.
Stephanie Jaremko, a 2005 Hall of Fame inductee, took home the CIAU Outstanding Diver award after setting CIAU records in both the 1m and 3m events. Her teammate, Barb Cappa, placed second in both events, while Judy Garay, a 2001 Hall of Fame inductee, took won Gold in the 100m Breaststroke.
But the CIAU team championship came as a result of strong swims from numerous teammates including three individual Silver medals from Anne-Marie Latta, who then joined with Becky Green, Nancy Lee and June Dies to capture the Silver in the 400m medley relay. It was truly a team effort, and one that paid off for this championship team by securing their place in history books of Canadian swimming. The twin victories were the 4th of 10 consecutive Ontario titles for the Varsity Blues and 2nd of six successive national crowns.
