In the 1960s and 1970s, the Varsity Blues had a reputation for being the swim team to beat. In 1971, coach Robin Campbell led this powerhouse squad to their eleventh consecutive Ontario-Quebec Athletic Assocaton championship and their sixth straight and unprecedented CIAU championship.

After dominating the OQAA league finals, the Varsity Blues qualified 10 swimmers for the national championships.

In the CIAU finals, the Blues faced their arch rivals: the University of Alberta Golden Bears. In a grand finale of sorts, the Blues clinched the CIAU title as Jim Shaw, Ross Ballantyne, Bob Heatley and Terry Bryon swam to victory in the 400-yard medley relay.

Team members include: James Adams, Thomas Ballantyne, Barry Bowerman (co-captain), Terrence Bryon, Robin Campbell (head coach), J. Ian Dalrymple, Zvi Eldar, Russell Farquhar, Aleksander Fedko, Adam Gesin, Michael Guinness (co-captain), J. Robert Heatley, John LaCosse (diving coach), Alex Lau, F. Douglas MacIntosh, John MacRae, David McWatters (manager), John Peters, Christopher Rockingham, Nick Rottmann, James Shaw, John Twohig.
