OLYMPIANS HIGHLIGHT 2017 SPORTS HALL OF FAME CLASS

Incredible international talent highlights the 14 newest University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame inductees who will be celebrated on Thursday, June 8, 2017.

The event will be held at the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport on the University of Toronto's downtown campus. Tickets are available at uoft.me/halloffame2017. The reception will start at 6 p.m., in the Goldring Centre's Kimel Family Field House.

Claire Thurgur, a member of the 1991-92 Olympic squad, as well as Canadian field hockey national team members and sisters Michelle Colaco and Nicole DeSouza each receive individual honours as their 1993 national and provincial champion Varsity Blues squad highlights this year's team inductions.

Six-time Olympian Jim Elder will also be celebrated on June 8. The two-time Olympic medalist and Canadian Walk of Fame inductee becomes the first equestrian athlete inducted into U of T's Sports Hall of Fame.

1928 Olympic gold medalist men's hockey Louis Hudson and former men's tennis champion Arthur Ham will also be inducted in the athlete category. Former all-Canadian Alison Evanoff is set to enter the Hall of Fame alongside her 1991 OUA and U SPORTS national championship winning cross country teams, while former national champion Theo Van Rijn and the 1965-66 national champion men's swimming team will also be honoured.

Highlighting this year's builder category are long-time U of T athletic therapist and equipment manager Norm Calder, as well as current Varsity Blues men's tennis head coach Nabil Tadros. Not to be forgotten is Viiu Kanep, inaugural winner of U of T's prestigious Clara Benson Honour award and former Women's T-Holders' Association president.

The Sports Hall of Fame honours U of T's greatest athletes and builders. It was established by the T-Holders' Association in 1987 as part of an ongoing effort to preserve and display the records relating to the outstanding historical tradition of athletic, academic and community leadership fostered by the University of Toronto.
