Rookie badminton player Jonathan Lai and veteran squash star Evelyn Moorhouse have been named the Varsity Blues male and female athletes of the week for the period ending March 19.

Jonathan Lai struck gold in men's doubles action at the 2017 Yonex Canadian national college/university championships this past weekend in Quebec City.

Partnered with Jason Ho-Shue, the duo went a perfect 5-0 to claim the top spot on the podium, including a thrilling 2-1 (21-19, 15-21, 21-13) victory in the gold-medal match.

As a team, Toronto fell 4-1 to both the UQAM Citadins and Montreal Carabins, with Lai earning both points for the Blues, winning a men's singles match vs UQAM and a men's doubles showdown against Montreal.

Fourth-year veteran Evelyn Moorhouse led the Varsity Blues women's squash team to a silver-medal finish at the Jesters Championships this past weekend at the Athletic Centre.

Moorhouse went 2-0 individually, defeating Laurier's Natalie Foote 3-0 (11-7, 11-9, 11-2) in semi-final action before topping Nichole Leblanc of the Western Mustangs 3-0 (11-3, 11-3, 11-2) in the finals.Â
