The University of Toronto honoured 202 student-athletes at the seventh annual academic excellence breakfast on Tuesday, November 15 at the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
Â
University of Toronto Vice-President and Provost Cheryl Regehr, Professor Ira Jacobs, Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education as well as Beth Ali, Executive Director of Co-Curricular Athletics & Physical Activity Programs, were on hand to honour this year's recipients. Other guests, including coaches, staff and friends were also in attendance Tuesday morning.Â
Â
The ceremony honours student-athletes, who while competing on a Varsity team, earned an 80% average or higher in all courses they were enrolled in during the 2015-16 academic year. Each recipient receives a pin: enamel for first-time winners, bronze for second, silver for third, gold for fourth, and a diamond pin for anyone earning this award five or more times during their intercollegiate career. Fastptich sensation Danielle Ridout received a quadruple diamond pin, representing the eight times she has achieved this result.
Â
The Blues also honoured four University of Toronto top scholar athletes, two of which earned a scholarship from the provost's office. Men's soccer captain Lukas MacNaughton and women's volleyball standout Denise Wooding were celebrated as the CIS sport top scholar athletes, while Blues lacrosse star Mitch De Snoo and women's golf champion Laura Upenieks earned the OUA top scholar athlete awards.
Â
An architecture major, MacNaughton was named an OUA first team all-star and CIS all-Canadian while helping the Blues to the 2015 OUA bronze medal and their first national championship berth since 2011 last season.
Â
A kinesiology major, Wooding was named an OUA first team all-star and earned national tournament all-star honours after helping the Varsity Blues women's volleyball team to a perfecto 25-0 season, their second straight OUA title and first-ever CIS national banner in program history last season.
Upenieks claimed the OUA individual title and was named an OUA all-star in leading the women's golf team to their fourth straight provincial title, all while maintaining an outstanding GPA in her second-year of pursuing a PhD in Sociology last season.Â
Â
De Snoo was named a 2015 CUFLA all-Canadian after leading the league with 35 goals in 11 games. He ranked third in the West division with 45 points all while excelling as a Master's of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology student.
The 231 student-athletes represent 24% of the Varsity Blues population. The Blues women's track & field team had 14 honourees, while 10 women's lacrosse players earned OUA academic achievement awards.
