WELLS GOLDEN AGAIN AT NATIONALS, READY FOR PAN AMS

University of Toronto Varsity Blues alumna Sarah Wells won her fourth career 400m hurdles national title as the 2015 Canadian track & field championships wrapped up Sunday in Edmonton and now sets her sights on the Pam Am podium.

The 2012 Olympian from Unionville, Ont., crossed the finish line in 56.03 seconds, .49 seconds ahead of Fawn Dorr.

"Sarah believed in herself and our program," said Varsity Blues track and field head coach Carl Georgevski. "After an injury-filled year she persevered and is showing only parts of what she is capable of doing. We are all looking forward to seeing what she can do at the Pan Am Games in a few weeks and in Beijing later this summer."

Wells, now competing as a member of University of Toronto Track Club, enjoyed a wealth of success during her four years with the Varsity Blues. She was named an OUA second team all-star and went onto represent Canada at the 2010 NACAC under-23 championships in 2010. She capped off the 2012 indoor season as a member of the OUA and CIS record-breaking 4x400m-metre relay team, garnering OUA all-star and CIS all-Canadian first team status.

Current Varsity Blues athletes Sasha Gollish and Sacha Smart also ran this weekend, earning national silver medals in their respective events.

Gollish crossed the women's 1500m finish line in a time of 4:20.43, only .14 seconds behind gold medalist Nicole Sifuentes. A PhD candidate in civil engineering, Gollish was named the CIS track female athlete of the year and the most outstanding female performer of the meet in leading the Varsity Blues to their first CIS title since 1998 this past season. The CIS first team all-Canadian claimed three gold medals at the national meet, taking the top spot in the 1000m and 3000m, while also being a member of CIS and Canadian record breaking 4x800 relay team.

After qualifying fourth, Smart paced himself to the first national second-place finish of his career in the men's 800m race in a time of 1:52.28. The 2015 OUA all-star helped the U of T men's 4x400 relay team to an OUA record breaking performance this past February, while also medalling in the 600m and 1000m events.

In the field, rookie thrower Ezana Debalkew finished first in the men's junior discus throw, booking his ticket to the Pan American Junior Championships with a distance of 48.54m. In addition, veteran jumper Julia Stille placed fourth in the women's triple jump with a distance of 12.70m.
