MASSIVE SWIMS FOR MASSE ON DAY 2

University of Toronto Varsity Blues rookie Kylie Masse continued her record-breaking ways as Day 2 of the OUA swimming championships wrapped up Friday night in Ottawa.
Toronto's men hold a commanding lead in the team standings, currently holding 676.5 points, ahead of the second-place Western Mustangs (386.5).

The Blues women are also in first place heading into the final day, with 599 points, ahead of the Mustangs with 525 points.

"Day 2 was always going to be our make-it-or-break-it day if we were going to win the women's title," said Varsity Blues head coach Byron MacDonald. "They did not disappoint, scoring points with great races every time we had too. The 74-point lead is more than enough for us to hold everyone off on the final day tomorrow."

Massive Night for Masse

Masse opened the championship with a record-breaking 100 backstroke performance on Day 1. The LaSalle, Ont., native did not disappoint, bettering three-time Olympian Joanne Malar's 20-year-old 200 individual medley record (2:12.86) with a time of 2:12.78 in the first race of the night.

Masse followed that up with another OUA record-breaking performance in the 200 backstroke, setting a new standard in 2:09.80, and capped off the night helping Toronto's 400 medley relay team of Vanessa Treasure, Sherry Patel and Jennifer Tapley to an OUA record time of 4:10.06.

"Kylie Masse is skyrocketing to the higher echelons of swimming," added MacDonald. "I knew there was talent in there waiting to come out and we are starting to see it now"

More Records Fall

Veteran sprinter Paige Schultz also came up with a big swim, bettering her own OUA record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.10 seconds. She also placed second in the 50 butterfly.  (27.53)

Other Golden Blues

Fourth-year veteran Bridget Coley earned a grand slam, winning her fourth career 800 freestyle time in a time of 8:46.44.

Sophomore standout Eli Wall earned his second individual title in as many nights, winning the 100 breaststroke event in 1:01.90, while Hochan Ryu took the men's 200 IM title in a time of 2:00.48.

Wall teamed up with Matthew Myers, Matt Dans and Mitch Ferraro to end Day 2 with a gold-medal performance in the men's 400 medley relay with a time of 3:41.77.
