WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD CROWNED OUA CHAMPIONS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's track and field team claimed the 2015 provincial title as the OUA champioships wrapped up Saturday evening at York University.

U of T claimed their first provincial title since 2004, accumulating 180 points to top the Gryphons by 51 points. The Western Mustangs placed third with 125, followed by the Windsor Lancers with 84.5 points and the York Lions with 83.

Toronto's men placed fifth overall with 78 points. The Gryphons claimed the men's crown with 157 points.

"It was an exceptional two days of track and field for our program," said Varsity Blues head coach Carl Georgevski. "Although track and field is an individual sport, the women's win was genuinely a team effort, where the sum of the parts became greater than the whole. I can't say enough about the determination and character our team demonstrated. On the men's side the schedule didn't allow us to 'run' to our strengths. The CIS schedule is different and favours us."

Toronto's women swept the 600m race, as Sasha Gollish set a new OUA record in 1:30.41, while Rachel Jewett (1:30.96) and Fiona Callender (1:32.66) placed second and third.

Gollish went onto win the 1500m race in a time of 4:22.15, with second-year standout Gabriella Stafford right behind her in 4:22.16.

U of T's 4x400 relay team of Maggie Hanlon, Ellie Hirst, Fiona Callender and Rachel Jewett earned gold in a time of 3:46.75, while Hayley Warren, Handlon, Madeline Warren and Lindsay Brandys placed third in the 4x200 relay.  Warren also placed third in the 60m sprint in a time of 7.49 seconds.

Leading Toronto in the field were silver-medal performances from Ekua Cudjoe in the weight throw (17.33m), Danielle Delage in the high jump (1.70m) and Julia Stille in the triple jump (12.66m).

Toronto's men capped off the meet with an OUA record breaking performance in the 4x400 relay. Isiah Weathers, Sacha Smart, Greg MacNeill and Rayshaun Franklin clocked a time of 3:17.10 to earn the gold medal.

Smart also placed second in the men's 600m in a time of 1:18.65
