SWIMMING BOASTS 33 MEDALS AT ONTARIO CUP

Members of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's swimming teams combined for 33 medals, including 15 first-place finishes, at the 2014 Ontario Cup, January 17-19, at Varsity Pool.

The meet kicked off U of T's annual Think Pink week in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Ontario Region, with all Blues swimmers sporting pink caps throughout the weekend.

Toronto's men were dominant through the entire weekend, sweeping the 50 butterfly, 200 butterfly and 200 breast stroke events. Fifth-year veteran and Oakville, Ont., native Zack Chetrat led the charge with first-place finishes in the 1500 freestyle and 200 butterfly, while fellow veteran Frank Despond placed first in both the 200 and 400 freestyle events.

Chris Manning earned gold in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 50 breaststroke, while Edward Liu won both the 50 and 100 butterfly events. David Riley (200 breaststroke), Matt Myers (200 backstroke), Hochan Ryu (200 IM) and Dan Kuiack (100 backstroke) all earned single wins during the three-day meet.

Leading the way in women's action was Paige Schultz with three victories in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 200 IM. Bridget Coley also had a stellar meet with two silver-medal finishes in the 400 and 800 freestyle events.
