SPRUKULIS COMMITS TO VARSITY BLUES FOOTBALL

The Varsity Blues football program is pleased to announce that 6-foot-5, 280-pound offensive lineman Danny Sprukulis has made known his intent to pursue his education at U of T while playing for the Blues in the fall of 2013.

The two-time Halton region senior tier 1 all-star was a highly sought-after recruit across the CIS.

“Danny is a huge addition to our program,” said Greg Gary, who enters his third season as Blues bench boss this fall. “He’s the full package. He’s a top student, great athlete, and the kind of person you want representing your team and university. We are very excited and are expecting great things from Danny during his career with us.”

A native of Oakville, Ont., Sprukulis was named a member of the under-18 Team Ontario West squad, where he was recognized as a 2012 Canada Cup all-star after helping his squad to a bronze medal at TD Waterhouse Stadium in London.

He played on both sides of the ball for the Holy Trinity C.S.S. Titans senior football team, starting at both left tackle and defensive line. Sprukulis also served as team captain of the Oakville Titans junior varsity team and was received the top lineman award in 2011.

He has been a prefect at Holy Trinity for the past three years and was selected for the Dominican Republic H.O.P.E. mission, where he recently travelled to help build homes for those in need.

“The coaching staff spent a lot of time working with me to explain their vision, approach and plans about the football program, and most importantly, the U of T focus on academics as a priority,” said Sprukulis.  “I feel that I’ll be able to get a top-level education and contribute early and often to the team, and do my part to bring the Varsity Blues to a [championship] game in the next four years.”

Students who sign a letter of intent and commit to Varsity Blues intercollegiate teams will be eligible to play at the University of Toronto provided they are academically admissible and have applied through the normal process with the Ontario Universities Application Centre.
