DEFENDING CHAMPS LEAD AFTER DAY 2 OF OUA SWIM MEET

Day 1 Recap

The host Toronto Varsity Blues men and Western Mustangs women padded their lead as Day 2 of the 2013 OUA swimming championships (Feb. 8) wrapped up Friday night at Varsity Pool.
 
U of T’s men (585) have a 110-point lead over the McMaster Marauders (475), with the Mustangs right behind in third with 430 points.  Western’s women (620.5) also widened the gap, with a 117.5-point advantage over the host Varsity Blues (503). The Marauders sit third with 455.5 points.
 
Six more records fell on Day 2, bringing the two-day total to 14.
 
Mike Smerek broke a 2004 record (24.83), leading a Toronto sweep of the 50-metre butterfly in a time of 23.86 seconds. He earned the OUA Major Grand Slam award for his fifth-consecutive win in the event.
 
Fifth-year veteran and Olympian Luke Hall (Swaziland) anchored U of T’s record-breaking 400 medley relay team of Matthew Myers, David Riley and Edward Liu to gold with a time of 3:42.28.
 
Gryphons Evan Van Moerkerke set his second record of the meet in the men’s 100 freestyle, bettering two-time Olympian Colin Russell’s 2009 time (49.17) in 49.14 seconds.  McMaster’s Konrad Bald was one-one hundredths shy of the 100 breast stroke record, claiming gold in 1:01.18 seconds.
 
Toronto’s Matthew Myers nabbed his second gold medal in as many days, winning the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:57.39.
 
Rounding out the men’s gold medalists was McMaster’s Cameron Bailey in the 200 IM (2:01.31) and Western’s Robert Wise in the 1500 freestyle (15:26.78).
 
In women’s action, Western’s Jennifer Trung, Paulyne Kilty, Shannon Nell and Ashleigh Dunnington capped off the night with a record-breaking 400 medley relay performance in a time of 4:11.54.
 
Ottawa’s Taylor Moore broke a 12-year-old record in the 200 backstroke, bettering Olympian Liz Warden’s 2001 time (2:11.62) by a full second in a time of 2:10.60. McMaster’s Alexandra Vanommen rounded out the record-breaking performances in the 100 breaststroke, out-touching previous record-holder Vanessa Treasure to claim gold in 1:10.41.
 
Rookie Marauders swimmer Emma Mittermaier earned her second individual gold medal of the meet, claiming the women’s 100 freestyle title in 56.41 seconds. Guelph’s Alisha Harricharan successfully defended her 50 butterfly title by the narrowest of margins, out-touching McMaster’s Sarah Taylor (27.53) in a time of 27.52 seconds to earn her second gold medal of the championships.
 
Toronto’s Bridget Coley claimed her second straight title in the 800 freestyle in a time of 8:39.11, also her second title of the meet. Ottawa’s Eryn Weldon picked up gold in the 200 IM race with a time of 2:14.99.
 
The three-day event wraps up tomorrow with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.
