SWIMMING CROWNED TIHANYI DIVISION CHAMPS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's swimming teams each placed first at the 2013 Tihanyi division championships this past weekend (Nov. 16-17) in Hamilton, Ont.
 
Toronto's women notched 1,140 points, finishing ahead of McMaster (980) and Laurentian (474), while the Blues men finished with 1,163 points, on top of McMaster (1,058.5) and Laurentian (364).
 
Sherry Patel led Toronto's women to victory, earning four gold medals in the meet. The University of Toronto Mississauga student won the 50 freestyle (26.16), 50 butterfly (27.17), 50 breast stroke (33.27) and 100 butterfly (59.94) over the two-day meet.
 
"Sherry has tons of speed and has moved her career up a notch," said Varsity Blues head coach Byron MacDonald. "She will be a major player come the CIS championships."
 
Fourth-year veteran and Mississauga native Vanessa Treasure also claimed four first-place finishes. The kinesiology major won the 400 IM (4:46.35), 100 breast stroke (1:11.57), 200 IM (2:16.59) and 200 breaststroke (2:33.29).
 
The women won 14 of the sixteen individual races. Bridget Coley picked up three gold for the Blues in the 400 freestyle (4:19.79), 800 freestyle (8:51.84) and 200 butterfly (2:20.17), while Paige Schultz won both the 100 freestyle (57.21) and 200 freestyle (2:04.07). Margot Cunningham rounded out the first-place finishes, winning the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:04.54.
 
In men's action, Toronto shared more of the medal count with the host Marauders, but still managed to win 11-of-16 individual races.
 
Second-year standout David Riley won three gold medals, touching the wall first in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.77), 200 breaststroke (2:20.46) and 200 IM (2:03.67).
 
"David will be a major player once he gets more confidence racing and more background in terms of training and strength," said MacDonald. "He does possess the tools to be an elite swimmer."
 
Other winners for the Blues were Edward Liu in the 50 butterfly (24.84) and 200 butterfly (2:01.74), Hochan Ryu in the 400 freestyle (4:03.35) and Alex Magnan in the 400 IM (4:31.64). Matt Myers won the 200 backstroke (2:02.83), Steven Hibberd took the top spot in the 50 freestyle (23.39), Matt Dans won the 100 freestyle (51.56) and Sam Yaghmour rounded out the first-place finishes in the 1500 freestyle (15:59.69).
