BLUES EARN TWO MEDALS ON DAY 1 OF CIS SWIM CHAMPS

Varsity Blues swimmers Zack Chetrat and Mike Smerek earned gold and silver medals in the men’s 100-metre butterfly on Day 1 of the CIS swimming championship in Calgary.

U of T’s women are currently in third place in the team standings with 114 points, behind the host Calgary Dinos (255) and UBC Thunderbirds (205). The OUA champion Blues men sit in fourth place with 111 points, behind Calgary (169.5), UBC (166) and Laval (133).

A native of Oakville, Ont., Chetrat recorded a personal best time of 53.30 seconds to successfully defend his CIS title. Smerek of St. Catharines, Ont., improved upon his bronze-medal finish in 2010, finishing right behind Chetrat in a time of 53.71 seconds.

Rookie swimmer and Toronto native Jeremie Holdom finished just off the podium in the men’s 400 individual medley (IM) with at time of 4:22.97, while second-year standout Taylor Bond with a fifth-place finish in the 200-metre freestyle (1:49.88).

Rounding out Day 1 results for the men were Bond, Steven Hibberd, Luke Hall and Peter Kruzyk, who swam to a fifth-place finish in the men’s 400 freestyle relay (3:23.66).

Sophomore Paige Schultz led the Varsity Blues women, who finished second to the Western Mustangs at the OUA championships two weekends ago. The Toronto native placed fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:01.12) and fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.88.

Also earning fourth-place finishes were 2011 OUA female swimmer of the year Andrea Jurenovskis (Timmins, Ont.) in the 50-metre backstroke (29.01) and rookie standout Vanessa Treasure of Mississauga, Ont., in the 400 IM (4:45.96).

Action continues tomorrow with preliminaries scheduled to start at 12 p.m. EST.
