The Varsity Blues earned 13 medals and shattered three more OUA records on the second day of the 2011 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) swimming championships at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Centre in Guelph, Ont.
Toronto is dominating the men’s standings with 547 points, ahead of Western (424.5) and McMaster (208.5). The Western Mustangs lead the women’s race with 512.5 points ahead of second-place Toronto (487.5) and McMaster (401).
Mike Smerek of St. Catharines, Ont., led the men, bettering Brad Vanderkam’s 2004 record (24.83) with a time of 24.78 en route to a gold medal in the men’s 50 butterfly.
The Blues finished 2-3-4 in the men’s 200 individual medley (IM), with Zach Summerhayes earning the silver medal, Jeremie Holdom winning the bronze and Curtis Samuel finishing fourth.
Rookie Taylor Bond of Westmount, Que., also earned a silver medal in the men’s 100 freestyle in a time of 51.59.
Leading the women was third-year standout and Timmins, Ont., native Andrea Jurenovskis, who finished first in the 200 backstroke (2:13.41) and second in the 50 butterfly with a time of 28.17.
Toronto finished 1-2-3-4 in the women’s 800, with veteran Poppy Ruksys of Kingston, Ont., finishing first in an OUA record time of 8:44.13. Heather Maitland, Molly Grove and Melanie Davis finished second, third and fourth, respectively.
Toronto native Paige Schultz earned a silver medal in the 200 IM, just one-tenth of a second shy of first-place Shannon Nell. Vanessa Treasure and Rebecca Sharpe also finished second in the 100 breaststroke and 200 backstroke.
The Blues 400 medley relay team of Jurenovskis, Treasure, Schultz and Julia Boron earned the gold medal with yet another OUA record time of 4:12.59.
The three-day OUA meet resumes Saturday morning with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time and finals at 6 p.m. EST.
