BADMINTON BEEFS UP ROSTER WITH THREE MORE RECRUITS

The Varsity Blues badminton program is pleased to announce three additional recruits that have accepted their offers of admission to the University of Toronto and committed to play badminton in the fall of 2010.

Adam Chan will enter U of T’s humanities program starting in September. Chan, who is currently ranked 11th in Ontario under-19 singles, placed fourth in boys doubles at the 2009 Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championship. He was a member of the gold medalist Toronto East team at the 2010 Ontario Winter Games in Bracebridge, Ont., and was a quarter-finalist in the B flight at the under-19 national junior championships.

“Adam has great potential to represent the Blues in doubles - he has had some strong results at both provincial and district level tournaments,” said Varsity Blues head coach Wayne King. “His experience at the 2010 Ontario Winter Games will undoubtedly help him within the team format of the OUA championship.”

Nolan Piette is a graduate of Mount Carmel Secondary School and will be entering the Faculty of Engineering this fall. The Mississauga, Ont., native competed with the Erindale junior badminton club and has also trained under Olympians Mike Beres and Val Loker. Piette was recently invited to the Ontario Winter Games tryout camp in Toronto, where he competed with 52 top-calibre badminton players.

“Nolan is highly dedicated in all aspects of his academic and athletic life,” said King. “We hope that his involvement with the Blues expands his skill base and offers him competitions that will bring his game to a new level.”

On the women’s side, Christl Cheng joins the Varsity Blues from Northern Secondary School in Toronto. She finished fourth in girl’s singles at the 2010 OFSAA badminton championship after an impressive bronze-medal finish at the 2009 tournament. The Toronto native is currently rank 11th among under-19 Ontario girl’s singles players. She has accepted her offer of admission to the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus (UTSC) management program.

“Christl is a very solid badminton player who has experienced a lot of success in tournaments around the province,” commented King. “She will benefit greatly from the intensive training within the Blues program.
