BALAZS 29TH AT WORLD OPEN WATER CHAMPIONSHIPS

The University of Toronto’s Zsofi Balazs was the second Canadian to cross the finish line in the 5km event at the 2010 Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) world open water swimming championships on Tuesday, July 20 in Roberval, Que.

After dropping out of the 10km on Saturday, the Toronto native came back to finish the 5km course in 1:05:30.29. This was Balazs’ second appearance at the FINA event after an impressive third-place finish at the open water trials in June.

Eva Fabian of the U.S., disqualified in Saturday’s 10km, took the gold in 1:02:00.99. Giorgia Consiglio of Italy earned her second silver of the competition in 1:02:01.09 and Ana Marcela Cunha of Brazil was third in 1:02:02.69. Karyn Jewell of Gatineau, Que., made her world championship debut and was the top Canadian in the 25th spot in 1:03:22.59.

A second-year psychology major, Balazs finished 33rd and was the first Canadian to finish at last year’s 10km world championship in Rome, Italy with a time of 2:02.24.3.
