FERGUSON, ANNESLEY INDUCTED INTO U OF T SPORTS HALL OF FAME

Badminton players Peter Ferguson and Rosemary Annesley were inducted into the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday, May 27 at Hart House Theatre.

Ferguson enjoyed a long and successful athletic career not only at the University of Toronto, and also in national and international competition.

Ferguson played on three intercollegiate champion Varsity Blues badminton teams in 1953-54, 1955-56 and 1957-58. In 1958 he was the intercollegiate doubles champion and garnered a Bronze T.

While dominating on the university scene, Ferguson also earned many accolades at other competitions. In 1956, he was the Toronto and district singles champion, the Montreal AAA singles champion, Ontario singles champion, the USA national capital open singles champion and the Strathgowan international singles champion. After being ranked second in singles in Canada, Ferguson became a three-time Ontario doubles champion between1958-60.

Ferguson went on to become the president of the Carleton Badminton and Squash Club from 1974-76 and the vice-president of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club from 1976-86.

A two-time member of the Women’s Athletic Association Directorate (WAAD), Annesley was a member of three consecutive intercollegiate championship badminton teams and was the individual champion in women’s singles for one year during her time at U of T.

Also a decorated intramural athlete, Annesley played four years of interfaculty badminton, where she earned singles champion honours and two team championship banners. She played intramural ice hockey for four years, winning two team championships. She also played intramural basketball for four years and swam for one year.

Annesley was president of St. Hilda’s College athletics association in 1939-40 and served on the Students’ Administrative Council executive council in1940-41. She also served as a sergeant in the women’s service training detachment as part of the Canadian Red Cross Corps in 1940-41.

Annesley passed away peacefully on November 3, 2008.

The Sports Hall of Fame honours U of T's greatest athletes and builders. It was established by the T-Holders' Association in 1987 as part of an ongoing effort to preserve and display the records relating to the outstanding historical tradition of athletic, academic and community leadership fostered by the University of Toronto.
