The Varsity Blues men’s basketball program is pleased to announce that Alex Hill has committed to play basketball and pursue an education at the University of Toronto in the fall of 2010.
A transfer student from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, Hill has been accepted into the Faculty of Physical Education and Health.
With four years of eligibility remaining, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound combo-guard will be an impact player from the moment he steps on campus. Known mostly as a shooter in high school, Hill has expanded his game tremendously and is a dangerous scorer and playmaker from the wing. He will help fill a gaping hole in the Blues offence after losing their four leading scorers in 2009-10.
As a freshman at Cornell during the 2008-09 season, Hill averaged 2.7 points per game, while shooting 45% from three point range and 47.8% overall. He recorded a career-high 18 points in 14 minutes played in a victory over Ursinus College and was a member of the team that won the Ivy League championship and lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament against Missouri.
Prior to attending Cornell, Hill led Eastern Commerce Collegiate Institute in scoring, averaging 14 points per game, and to silver-medal finishes at OFSAA in both 2007 and 2008. Hill also won gold medals as a member of Team Ontario at the under-15 and under-17 national championships.
The Toronto native is no stranger to Varsity Blues athletics as his father, Sam, played for the Blues basketball team and was named an OUAA East first team all-star in 1986-87. Similarly, Hill’s mother, Pam Prophet, was a member of U of T’s track and field team, where she was the Canadian national champion in triple jump in 1987.
Students who sign a letter of intent and commit to Varsity Blues intercollegiate teams will be eligible to play at the University of Toronto provided they are academically admissible and have applied through the normal process with the Ontario Universities Application Centre.
