The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s golf team sits in fourth place, while the men are in 11th after the first round of play at the 2010 Canadian University/College Championship conducted by Golf Canada at Kingswood Park in Fredericton, N.B.

Leading the Blues women’s squad is 2009 OUA bronze medalist Laura Upenieks, whose first-round score of 76 (40, 36) leaves her tied for eighth in the women’s individual standings. The Blues are just one stroke behind the third-place Université de Montréal with a first-day total of 338.

Scott Samuel’s first-day total of 71 leads the U of T men. The Etobicoke, Ont., native is currently tied with six other golfers for sixth place in the men’s individual standings. U of T is in a tight race in the men’s team standings with a score of 154, only seven strokes behind the first-place Montréal Carabins.

In the men’s competition, the Université of Montréal took the first round lead carding a team score of 289, led by Philippe-André Bannon and Benoit Gordon, who both shot 69 and lead the individual rankings. Defending champions, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds are just two strokes behind at 291. Sitting in third place is the University of Western Ontario with a score of 292. Host University of New Brunswick sits in 13th position, at 304.

On the women’s side, six-time defending champions, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds have taken up where they left off last year, leading the field with a team score of 297, with Kylie Barros shooting a 73. University of Victoria is just six strokes behind, led by Anne Balser who shot 75. Rounding out the top three is the University of Montreal, at 337.

In addition to the opening round, a long-driving competition resulted in five qualifiers for the respective men’s and women’s categories. These 10 individuals will compete in the final tomorrow.

Play continues tomorrow (June 1) at Kingswood Park with second round action getting underway at 7:30 a.m. (ADT).
