The University of Toronto Varsity Blues will hit the links with Canada’s top university and college golfers at Kingswood Park in Fredericton, N.B., from May 30-June 3 in the eighth annual University/College Championship, conducted by Golf Canada.
In all, 156 male and female golfers from post-secondary institutes across Canada will travel to Fredericton to compete for both team and individual titles at this year’s event. The field will be comprised of 20 men’s and 10 women’s teams as well as six individuals. The competition begins Sunday, May 30 with a practice round and opening ceremonies at Kingswood Park. Following Wednesday’s third round, the field will be reduced to the top 10 men’s and the top five women’s teams, as well as any individuals within 15 strokes of the lead.
Leading U of T’s men’s team will be fifth-year co-captain Scott Samuel. The Etobicoke, Ont., native recently won the Humber College Invitational at Hidden Lake Golf Club in Burlington, Ont. His final round score of four under par (67) gave him a 36-hole total of 140 and a two shot victory.
Samuel also finished second by a single stroke at the 2009 OUA championship with a two-round total of 139 and has developed into one of the top players in Ontario university golf.
Richard Persaud, a third-year golfer from Scarborough, Ont. will be called upon to contribute this weekend and former New Brunswick junior amateur champion Nick Clark from Riverview, N.B. will look to shine close to home in Fredericton.
The Varsity Blues 2009 OUA champion women's team features veteran Jane Jhung and four first-year players that are looking to make their mark on the national stage.
2009 OUA individual bronze medalist Laura Upenieks of Etobicoke, Ont., has posted strong results in her first year of intercollegiate competition, most recently finishing second at the Humber College Invitational. Fellow freshman Na Eun Park earned the individual silver medal at the OUA championship last October and is poised to play well at her first national championship.
“This is an exciting tournament where we get to watch some of the best collegiate golfer’s across Canada compete,” stated Golf Canada Tournament Director Alison Turcotte. “The improved strength of the player field over the last several years has truly made this one of the premier championships in Canada, and it continues to get better every year.”
As part of Golf Canada’s Pathway to Champions, both the male and female individuals achieving the low score after 72 holes (four rounds) of play will earn an exemption into the 2010 Canadian men’s amateur championship at London Hunt and Country Club in London, Ont., and the 2010 Royale Cup Canadian women’s amateur championship held at Morningstar Golf Course in Parksville, B.C., respectively.
