MAGALAS, KATZ SET FOR 5TH ANNUAL ALL-STAR CHARITY SHOOTOUT

Varsity Blues men’s basketball graduate Nick Magalas and head coach Mike Katz have been selected to participate in the fifth annual All-Star Charity Shootout (ASCS), featuring 20 of the best basketball players across Canada on Saturday, July 17 at York University.

Magalas earned his second consecutive OUA all-star nod in 2009-10 after leading the Blues to a third-place finish in the competitive OUA East division. The Burlington, Ont. native ended his senior season with 15.09 points per game and was ranked eighth in the country with over 100 assists in 22 games. During his five-year career, Magalas amassed 1199 points and goes down in the record books as one of U of T’s top three-point shooters of all time.

Katz has been appointed the bench boss of team Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons Foundation. Already known as one of the most renowned men’s basketball coaches in Canadian college history, Katz made the jump to university basketball in 2004 and thus began another successful chapter in is coaching career. Since then, he has guided the Blues to six consecutive post-season appearances and earned OUA and CIS coach of the year honours in 2007-08.

Prior to joining the Blues, Katz spent 19 seasons as head coach of the men’s basketball team at Humber College, leading the Hawks to seven provincial championships and five national titles. In addition to being a four-time Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) and three-time Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) coach of the year, Katz is also the assistant coach of the Canadian national basketball team and took part in the 2000 Olympic Games and world basketball championships in 1993 and 2002.
