Two new champions were crowned as the University of Toronto hosted the 2010 Black Knight Canadian university and colleges squash championships this weekend (March 5-7) at the Athletic Centre Squash Courts.
This was the ninth consecutive year the University of Toronto has hosted the event. This year’s championships saw 92 players from 17 different colleges and universities compete in 158 matches.
uOttawa’s Adruab Dudzicki defeated two-time champion Graeme Schnell of the University of Calgary to win the men’s open division, while Waterloo Warrior Micaala Seth defeated OUA rookie of the year Erin Roberts of the Queen’s Gaels to take the women’s crown. Both Dudzicki and Seth earn a trip to represent Canada at the seventh World University Games, July 10-18, in Melbourne, Australia.
The men’s open final went back-and-forth before Dudzicki defeated Schnell 11-7 in the fifth-and-final game (8-11,12-10,11-9,6-11,11-7). Dudzicki never allowed Schnell to develop his hard hitting game and kept him off balance with a mixture of cuts and drops at the front of the court.
The bronze-medal match saw two Western Mustangs compete for a spot on the podium and Ryan Herden defeated Brian Hong 3-2 to claim the third-place finish.
The women’s open final was just as close and exciting as Seth took the game 3-2 (9-11, 11-9, 1-11,12-10,12-10). Both Seth and Roberts each had periods when they dominated but in the last points in the final game, Seth kept her nerve to take the match 12-10.
The bronze-medal match was an all University of Manitoba contest between Nikole Todd and Rachel Hinton with Todd coming out on top 3-0.
The University of Toronto had a record 34 entrants in this year’s championship. The Varsity Blues women took three of the top four places in the women’s A division as Daniah Shamim, Shuhsien Zhu and Soojin Yi placed second, third and fourth, respectively.
Jason Tan finished fifth in the men’s A division, while Brett Sagert, Sam Carsley and Wilfred Ip were in the top four of the men’s B division.
Hayley Fleming and Elizabeth Cambridge finished third and fifth in the women’s C division, while Satinder Sanghera was third in the D division.
