CALGARY - University of Toronto wrestler Shujon Mazumder became only the second Varsity Blue to win a CIS gold medal after defeating Regina’s Steven Schneider in the final of the 54kg at the 2010 CIS championships, March 5-6, at the University of Calgary.
At the post-championships banquet, Mazumber was named the 2010 outstanding male wrestler after dominating his weight class en route to the gold medal. Mazumber was also the outstanding wrestler at the OUA championships earlier this season.
"This feels great," said Mazumber. "It really does make all the hard work in the last three years worthwhile. I enjoy working hard anyway so this is just like a really nice added extra."
Mazumder joins Peter Brown on the list of male Varsity Blues athletes who have reached the top of the national podium. After finishing third in 1995, Brown won the 90kg event in 1996. Since then, no other U of T wrestler has finished in the top-three in the country.
"Shujon's game has been steadily getting better and better," said Blues wrestler head coach Mike Quinsey. "He is a coach's dream in that he listens to what you say and then incorporates suggestions while maintaining and honing his own instincts and decision making."
Toronto’s other wrestler competing at the meet, Dene Ringuette of Pickering, Ont., also reached the podium this weekend. The biophotonics major defeated Concordia’s Mike Noonan to earn a bronze medal in the 76kg category.
"Dene showed incredible tenacity in his final match for third spot," said coach Quinsey. "He lost the first round but then came back and used intelligent strategies to peck away at his opponent's ability to score to win the second round and then followed it up with much of the same to win the third round."
" It's tough in a tournament when you lose your first match but then you have to just figure out what you did wrong and make sure that you don't do it again," said the veteran Ringuette. "Fortunately, I was able to put together a solid game plan in all my remaining matches."
