The University of Toronto Varsity Blues track and field team had athletes competing at the 39th annual York Open and the 23rd annual Meyo Invitational at the University of Notre Dame this weekend (Feb. 5-6).
Fifth-year veteran Jason Wurster of Stevensville, Ont. led the way at the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University. Wurster cleared a CIS-leading height of 5.50m to break Francois Thenault’s previous meet record of 5.25m (1999) and earn the gold medal.
Third-year high jumper Brett Georgevski (Markham, Ont.) also placed first, topping 2.00m to reach the CIS standard and edge second-place Andrew Dandie of Windsor (1.97m).
Other top results at the York Open included third-place finishes from Jessica Caterini of Ajax, Ont. in the 300m (42.03) and Toronto native Jeremy Sin in the men’s 60m hurdles (8.46).
The Blues also had many top performances in South Bend, Indiana this weekend. The women’s 4x400m relay team of Alicia Brown (Ottawa), Sarah Wells (Unionville, Ont.), Athena McBean (Mississauga, Ont.) and Tory Merrill (Orangeville, Ont.) recorded a CIS-leading time of 3:46.17.
Fifth-year veteran Sarah Boyle (Scarborough, Ont.) placed fifth in an elite field of women’s high jumpers with a height of 1.75m, while Brown also placed sixth in the 300m with a time of 39.58 seconds.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, February 13 when they travel to Ithica, New York for the Robert Kane Invitational.
