BLUES FOOTBALL HOSTS LANCERS IN 2010 SEASON OPENER

TORONTO, Ont. – The University of Toronto Varsity Blues will open the 2010 football season on Labour Day Monday when they play host to the University of Windsor Lancers at 7 p.m., September 6th, at Varsity Centre.

The Blues will look to exact some revenge after a 30-3 loss to the Lancers on the first Saturday of 2009 OUA regular-season play at University of Windsor stadium. Toronto has lost seven straight to Windsor. The last time the Blues defeated the Lancers was Oct. 13, 2001, when they downed their hosts 13-11.

Also at Varsity Centre, the battle of Argo Cup will take place under the lights this season when the York Lions visit U of T on Friday, Sept. 17. The Blues have won the last two Cup contests – a 58-7 lopsided affair on Sept. 13, 2008 fallowed by a convincing 45-27 drubbing of the Lions in the 40th contested Red and Blue Bowl on Oct. 3, 2009 at York University.

The Blue and White will be on the road to face the defending Vanier Cup champions Queen’s Gaels on Thanksgiving Saturday, Oct. 9, as well as the 2009 Yates Cup finalists, the Western Mustangs, in the final game of the regular season. Kick-off for both days is set for 1 p.m.

Some other OUA match-ups of interest in 2010:

• The McMaster Marauders visit the Western Mustangs on Saturday, Sept. 11. Western head coach Greg Marshall has never defeated his former Marauders team in two tries.

• On Saturday, Sept. 18, regional battles take place as the Waterloo Warriors and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks battle once again at University Stadium, while the Western Mustangs visit the Windsor Lancers in an evening affair.

• Those fans anticipating a Yates Cup re-match between the Gaels and Mustangs will have to wait until week five when Queen’s visits TD Waterhouse Stadium for the first time since 2007.

• In another playoff re-match, the Western Mustangs visit the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, Sept. 25 in a 2009 homecoming sequel. In front of a full house at Alumni Field on Sept. 26, 2009, both teams combined for 1,065 yards of total offence in a 41-39 Western victory.

• Queen’s Gaels visit the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, Oct. 16. Laurier was the only team to defeat the Gaels during their title run last year, a 25-13 outcome on Oct. 24, 2009.

The OUA regular season concludes on Saturday, Oct. 23 with five games that will no doubt have playoff implications. Last season, five teams finished with records of 6-2 or better - an OUA first.

The OUA quarter-finals will take place on Saturday, Oct. 30 followed by the OUA semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 6. The OUA football season concludes at the 103rd Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums on Saturday, Nov. 13.
