MEN’S VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO GAELS IN OUA QUARTER-FINAL

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Queen’s Gaels in OUA quarter-final action on Friday, February 26 in Kingston, Ont. to bring their 2009-10 season to a close.

Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont. had a game-high 15 points while four Gaels teammates broke double-digit scoring as the third-place Queen’s Gaels (17-4) move on to the OUA Final Four tournament next weekend.

In their first playoff game since 2007, Toronto failed to find any momentum in the opening two sets with the Gaels winning easily 25-15 and 25-14. With their season on the line, the third set saw a much different Varsity Blues team taking the Gaels to the limit. Despite their best efforts, U of T could not get past the Gaels in the third, falling 27-25.

Zeeman tallied 15 points, on 10 kills, two blocks, and three aces, while Sam Pedlow of Barrie, Ont., and Niko Rukavina (Mississauga, Ont.) had 11 points each. Bryan Fautley of Oakville, Ont., and Michael Amoroso of Toronto had 10 in a total team effort by Queen’s.

Mitchell Woodside (Clyde River, P.E.I.) and Adam Palmer of Ottawa led Toronto’s scorers with eight points each. Woodside had six kills with two blocks, while Palmer registered his points on two kills and six blocks. OUA leading scorer and first team all-star Steven Kung (Toronto) tallied seven points in the loss.

OUA quarter-final games continue tomorrow with Guelph meetings Windsor at 2:00pm in Windsor, Ont., and Waterloo taking on Western at 4:00pm in London, Ont. The Gaels will meet the winner of the Waterloo vs Western quarter-final game, on Friday, Mar. 5. at 8:00pm in Hamilton.
