The Varsity Blues men’s volleyball program is pleased to announce the Nick McCaughan of Winnipeg has signed a letter of intent and plans on becoming a student-athlete at the University of Toronto this fall.
A member of the U17 Team Manitoba squad, McCaughan was elected the team’s captain for leadership skills as well as his determination and consistency on the court. His provincial team finished fifth at the Western Elites where he earned the tournament’s best setter award.
“Nick is one of the top high school setters in the province of Manitoba and I'm thrilled that he has committed to play volleyball and pursue a degree at the University of Toronto,’ said Blues head coach Ed Drakich. “Nick's setting experience combined with his athleticism and court leadership will definitely enhance Toronto’s men's volleyball program."
The 6-foot-3 McCaughan, currently completing studies at Dakota Collegiate, started his high school career as a leftside hitter but was moved to setter on his junior Varsity team where he was also named team captain.
As a starter on the Varsity team, McCaughan helped lead his team to the finals of the 2009 Manitoba High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) provincial championships. He was named a Maples and St. Vital tournament all-star, was honoured as a provincial and graduating all-star and was named to the AAAA All Manitoba team this past season.
McCaughan hopes to enter the kinesiology program in the Faculty of Physical Education and Health if accepted to the U of T.
Students who sign a letter of intent and commit to Varsity Blues intercollegiate teams will be eligible to play at the University of Toronto provided they are academically admissible and have applied through the normal process with the Ontario Universities Application Centre.
