MAZUMDER NAMED OUTSTANDING MALE WRESTLER AT OUA CHAMPS

Shujon Mazumder was named the most outstanding wrestler as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues earned three medals at the 2010 OUA wrestling championships on Saturday, February 20 at Alumni Hall in London, Ont.

Mazumber won gold in the 54 kg weight class with a victory over CIS top-ranked Aaron Fabiano (Windsor, Ont.) of the Brock Badgers.

“I just went in there to do the thing I loved doing,” said Mazumder. “It all came together for me pretty well. Winning the MVP was really great.”

“Shujon has been diversifying his game and increasing his intensity to a new level,” said Varsity Blues head coach Mike Quinsey. “His second round in the final match was absolutely electrifying and his MVP award was well deserved as he delivered the tournament’s most spectacular throws in combination with solid leg attacks.”

Fourth-year veteran Dene Ringuette of Pickering, Ont. picked up Toronto’s other gold medal in the men’s 76kg category.

“I really enjoy watching Dene Ringuette at work,” said Quinsey. “As a grad student in biology and genetics he has the wrestling game down to a science and works to expend the minimal energy necessary to win.”

Toronto’s lone female wrestler at the meet, Melissa Biscardi, won the silver medal in the 48kg event. Biscardi fell to Brock’s Jasmine Mian in the gold-medal round.

Other notable results include Matt Fructman’s fourth-place finish in the 90kg and John Feng’s fifth-place finish in the 68kg class.

“This was a terrific squad of University of Toronto student-athletes that came to this tournament,” said Quinsey. “Not only did Shujon and Dene compete amazingly well, but the other Varsity Blues athletes were behind them and supporting them every step of the way. Although we had very few numbers on our team this year, the wrestlers who came out worked harder than they ever have before and the results showed.”

The Blues will now prepare for the 2010 CIS championships, March 5-6, hosted by the University of Calgary.
