The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s basketball and volleyball teams wrap up their regular seasons and fight for playoff positioning on home court this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 20-21 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
U of T’s men’s basketball hosts the Ryerson Rams in their last regular season game on Saturday night at 8 p.m. Toronto is currently two points ahead of the Queen’s Gaels and Rams. A win on Saturday night would secure third place for the Varsity Blues and home court advantage for the first round of the playoffs.
Toronto defeated the Rams 71-64 on Wednesday night. Fifth-year guard Rob Paris (St. Catharines, Ont.) currently leads the team and is ranked 15th in the conference with 15.50 points per game. Nick Magalas (Burlington, Ont.), the Blues second leading scorer, has totalled 14.90 points per game, while Drazen Glisic (Sarajevo, BIH) continues to lead the Blues under the basket with 8.05 boards per game.
This being the Varsity Blues last regular season home game, University of Toronto intercollegiate athletics will be honouring Magalas, Paris, Patrick Sewell and Nick Snow in a graduating athlete ceremony prior to the game.
Blues men’s volleyball hosts the Windsor Lancers on Saturday and Western Mustangs on Sunday with both games scheduled to start at 2 p.m. U of T has a game in hand and is tied with the Laurier Golden Hawks for the last playoff spot. Two points this weekend would secure a playoff berth as Toronto holds the head-to-head series tie-breaker versus Laurier.
Two-time CIS all-Canadian Steven Kung currently leads the OUA with 4.42 kills per game. The fifth-year leftside hitter will also be honoured in a graduating athlete ceremony prior to Sunday’s game against the Mustangs.
Sophmore Mike Manning is ranked 10th in the conference, averaging 3.60 points per game, while veteran Deagan McDonald ranks sixth among OUA setters with 8.60 assists per game and also leads the team with 24 serving aces this season. Toronto also has a large presence at the net with middles Adam Palmer and Matt Stefanoff recording 55 and 57 blocks, respectively.
