The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s squash team heads to Waterloo, Ont. for the 2010 OUA championships this weekend (Feb. 13) at Northfield Racquet Club.
The Varsity Blues women’s squash team has medaled in every OUA championship since 1999-00. In that time we have collected four gold, four silver and two bronze, however, keeping the run alive this year will be one of the team’s biggest challenges.
This season, the team lost two key veterans due to post-graduate demands and has also faced the injury bug. Despite these setbacks, the team has battled through the season with a 2-2 record in OUA play and 2-2 record against St. Lawrence University and Hamilton College from New York.
The team has been led at the top of the order by fourth-year veteran Megan Northey, who has played in every match. For the upcoming semifinal against the top-ranked Queen’s team, the Blues will pick from seven players.
Veterans Soojin Yi and Shuhsien Zhu of Toronto as well as Daniah Shamim (Oshawa, Ont.) and Rebeca Tristan Aldave (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) will contest for the number two-five positions, while either Agata Bartczak and rookie Helena Whyte (both of Toronto) will round out the top six in their first OUA playoff appearance.
The Blues are certainly in for a tough battle on Saturday but head coach Dave Cooper is confident their team will try as hard as they can to extend the medal run to 11 years.
