In what was another outstanding run to the national championship, the Varsity Blues field hockey team finished the season second in the OUA standings with a 10-1-3 record and fifth in the country.
Team captain Kristen Shier finished the season ranked second in the OUA with 11 goals in 14 games. The Blues had three other players finish in the top 10. Veteran Rianna Sterk and rookie Natalie Provenzano tied for fifth with nine goals apiece, while Kyesia O’Neale was ninth with six goals in 13 games.
The Blues went on to defeat the Western Mustangs 2-1 in OUA semi-final action to earn a spot in the OUA gold-medal match and a berth in the 2009 CIS championship in Victoria, B.C.
U of T was unable to defend their provincial title, falling 1-0 to the undefeated Guelph Gryphons in what was the third consecutive OUA final featuring the Gryphons and the Blues.
Five members of the Varsity Blues earned OUA all-star status. O’Neale, Shier, Hannah Tighe and Kaelen Watson were named to the first team, while Sterk garnered second team status.
Toronto went 1-3 at the CIS championship hosted by the University of Victoria, with their lone win coming over the Alberta Pandas. Watson was named a first team all-Canadian, while O’Neale and Tighe were named to the second team.
