BUSY WEEKEND FOR BLUES TRACK & FIELD

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues track and field team had athletes competing in three meets this weekend (Jan. 29-30) across the United States.

The majority of the team travelled to Ohio for the University of Findlay’s Indoor Classic. Second-year standout Tamara Jewett (Toronto) broke the meet record (5:03.62) in the women’s mile, crossing the finish line in 4:58.70.

Fellow sophomore Alicia Brown (Ottawa) placed first in both the 200m and 400m before teaming up with Jessica Caterini (Ajax, Ont.), Athena McBean (Mississauga, Ont.) and Sarah Wells (Unionville, Ont.) to break the meet record and earn the gold medal in the women’s 4x400m relay with a time of 3:54.03.

Second-year art history major Laura Maessen (Dartmouth, N.S.) cleared 1.70m to top all competition in the women’s high jump.

Tory Merrill (Orangeville, Ont.) had another fantastic showing with a second-place finish in the women’s pentathlon. The Orangeville, Ont. native finished with an overall score of 3398, just 16 points behind first-place Kayla Wilson of Cornerstone. Merrill also placed third in the women’s 60m hurdles with a time of 9.09 seconds.

Other top results in Ohio include second-place finishes from Wells in the women’s 600m run (1:34.70) and Stephen Douglas of Picton, N.S. in the 1000m (2:31.39), while rookie Mike Trnkus (Oakville, Ont.) placed third in the men’s 400m with a time of 49.88 seconds.

At the Terrier Classic in Boston, Mass., fifth-year veteran Mike Del Monte (Guelph, Ont.) posted a personal best time of 2:24.10 in the men's 1000m to finish a full two seconds ahead of second-place Julien Matthews of Providence.  

Rounding out U of T’s presence in the U.S.A. was 2009 CIS silver medalist Jason Wurster at the 20th annual Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada. The Stevensville, Ont. native cleared 5.40m to top the men’s college division ahead of Chase Cooper of the Air Force Academy at 5.10m.

The Varsity Blues return to action on Saturday, February 6 when they travel across town for the York Classic.
