BLUES LINEMAN SIGNS WITH CFL'S TIGER CATS

Moments after their last regular season game, Varsity Blues offensive lineman Chris Kowalczuk got the best news of his life. The 6-foot-5, 295 lbs veteran was told by his head coach that the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger Cats wanted to sign him immediately to their practice squad.

“It was the best news I’d heard all year. I was very excited,” said Kowalczuk. “I was also a little intimidated [when I first heard the news] but this is what I’ve been working for.”

The Brampton, Ont. native studying geography at U of T, was on the roster for approximately two weeks before the Ti-Cats released him. “It was a great way to learn the level of intensity I want to play at,” he explained. “And the level they play at.”

Kowalczuk was released as Hamilton prepared for the post-season and had to cut their roster size for the playoffs. However, during this off-season, the right tackle has signed a two-year contract with the Ti-Cats that is effective once he makes the team.

With the help of some advisors as well as some of the Blues coaching staff, Kowalczuk made the move and will use the winter months to prepare for Hamilton’s training camp in May.

“[Blues alumni] Dan Feraday as well as coach Samir and coach Wayne, who’ve both played in the CFL, really helped me [during the contract process],” said Kowalczuk. “I signed it [the contract], wanting to express my appreciation for the opportunity to show them [Ti-Cats] what I can do, and to have the chance to prove myself.”
