After claiming their first OUA title in 20 year last season, the Varsity Blues men’s golf team came back to finish fifth at the 2009 OUA championships hosted by the University of Toronto.
The Blues posted some impressive results in 2009, including a second-place team finish at the Holiday Inn Colonial Classic in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Top individual performances included Scott Samuel’s second-place finish at the Waterloo/Laurier Invitational Oct. 3-4, and Richard Persaud’s third-place finish at the Western Invitational on Sept. 25.
At the conference championships, the defending champions Varsity Blues finished play with a two-day total of 599. Samuel and Western’s Charles Fitzsimmons were tied down to the final three holes. Unfortunately, Fitzsimmons stepped up and shot eagle, par, birdie to secure the individual men’s title, shooting 138, one stroke ahead of Samuel.
Samuel was named an OUA all-star for his second-place individual finish.
