DOUBLE GOLD FOR BLUES WRESTLING AT BROCK OPEN

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's wrestling team came away with two gold medals at the Brock Open this past Sunday, January 10.

Third-year student Shujon Mazumder of Toronto was victorious in the 54kg division.

"I've been working with Shujon on his reactive and offensive movement strategies and it's good to see some consistent results," explains Blues wrestling coach Mike Quinsey. "He's been working hard this year and his wins are well deserved.”

Mazumder is looking to build on this momentum and continue his winning ways;"the key for me is to keep on developing my ability to throw strong offensive combinations at my opponents. We have a number of good tournaments coming up and I intend to keep this momentum going," said the OISE graduate student.

In impressive fashion, Dene Ringuette (Pickering, Ont.)  took home a second gold medal for the Varsity Blues on Sunday, defeating the 2009 CIS champion Brad Trimble in the final of the 76kg weight class.

“Dene's final match against last year's CIS gold medalist [Trimble] was one of the most exciting matches I've seen this year,” said coach Quinsey. “Dene is improving his offensive capacity every time he steps on the mat."

"It's good to face a CIS champion in the finals because it gives me a good test of what works and what doesn't," said Ringuette.

Also on the mats in St. Catharines was John Feng (Scarborough, Ont.), who managed a fifth-place finish in the 72kg event.

The Varsity Blues will travel to Kingston, Ont. this Sunday, January 17 to take part in the Queen's Open.
