WOMEN THIRD, MEN FIFTH AT WESTERN INVITATIONAL

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues golf team had another successful on the links in the London, Ont. - this time at the Western Invitational - Friday, September 25 at Sunningdale Golf Course.

The Varsity Blues women’s team earned their second third-place finish in as many days with an overall team score of 261. The Queen’s Gaels earned the gold medal with a score of 234, while the host Mustangs finished second with a final score of 246.

Laura Upenieks (Toronto) led the Blues once again, finishing tied for fourth with a score of 78, while Toronto native Christine Ho finished in a three-way tie for 10th, shooting 84 on the day.

In men’s action, Toronto finished in fifth place with a team score of 303. The Laurentian Voyageurs earned the top spot, shooting a combined team score of 296, while the Waterloo Warriors were two strokes behind and good for a second-place finish.

Leading the way for the Blues was third-year international studies student Richard Persaud (Scarborough, Ont.). Persaud finished in a three-way tie for third with a score of 71, while fifth-year veteran Scott Samuel finished in a six-way tie for eighth, shooting 73.

The Varsity Blues return to the greens next weekend (Oct. 3-4) when they travel to Cambridge, Ont. for the Waterloo Invitational.
