The Varsity Blues women’s fencing team captured their second consecutive OUA title this season, sweeping all three individual weapons events as well as the three team events at the OUA championships.
Toronto finished with a total of 312 points, 114 points ahead of second-place Royal Military College Paladins (198). The University of Western Ontario rounded the top-three with 148 points.
Mandy Lau finished first in foil, Hilary Peden was tops in epée and Alison Doyle brought home the gold in sabre at both the OUA qualifier at Western and the OUA championships at U of T.
Foilist Claire Midgley and eppeist Joanne Ko each picked up OUA silver medals in their respective events. Ko also received the Dave O’Donnell Trophy, awarded to the female fencer most proficient in skill, style and sportsmanship.
Lau, Peden, Doyle, Midgley and Ko were each recognized as 2008-09 all-stars.
Varsity Blues head coach and former U of T fencer, Thomas Nguyen, was awarded the Christian Virdosa trophy as fencing’s coach of the year.
