BARTER, MALLINGER LEAD BLUES IN SUDBURY

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues Nordic ski team competed in the second Ontario University Athletics (OUA) qualifier this weekend (Feb. 7-8) on the Laurentian University ski trails in Sudbury, Ont.

Leading the way on Saturday was Aaron Barter (Almonte, Ont.), who placed fifth in the men’s 15km classic, finishing the course with a time of 43:50.3.

Erin Mallinger (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) was the top female for the Blues, with an eight-place finish in the women’s 10km classic. Kate Sauks (Owen Sound, Ont.) was next to cross the line for Toronto in 15th place with a time of 39:49.2.

In Sunday’s skate race, Barter and Mallinger again led the Blues. Barter placed sixth in the men’s 10km free skate race with a time of 24:58.3, while Mallinger finished in ninth in the women’s 5km free skate race (14:48.2). Mary Qiu also picked up a 14th place finish in the 5km free skate race with a time of 15:50.5, while Sauks finished 16th.

The Varsity Blues return to action, February 21-22, when they head to Haliburton, Ont. for the 2008-09 OUA championships hosted by the University of Waterloo.
