The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s squash team went 1-2 over three exhibition matches versus top NCAA competition this weekend, December 5-6, at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.
The Blues fell 7-2 in both of their matches versus the host Hamilton Continentals before defeating a young squad from the University of Rochester 7-0.
In their first match against the Continentals, the Blues were close to narrowing the gap as Toronto natives Shuhsien Zhu and Agata Bartczak took both of their matches to five games.
Lower down the order, first-year Helena Whyte (Toronto) and veteran Soojin Yi (Toronto) both recorded 3-0 wins, while Rebecca Tristan Aldave (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) was the only other Blue to take a game off the Continentals, losing 3-1.
In almost identical situations in the second contest versus Hamilton, Zhu and Bartczak again dropped their respective matches 3-2. Whyte completed a two-game sweep while Daniah Shamim (Oshawa, Ont.) struggled early in her match but eventually came out with a 3-1 win.
Both Yi and Megan Northey (Victoria, B.C.) took games off their opponents the second time around as the Blues improved significantly from their early performance.
Toronto met a young team from the University of Rochester to close out their exhibition trip, defeating the Yellowjackets 3-0 in all seven matches.
With the winter exam break around the corner, the Varsity Blues return to action when they host the OUA crossover, January 16-17, 2010 at the Athletic Centre Squash Courts.
