MEN’S WRESTLING FINISH FOURTH AT GTA OPEN

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s wrestling team earned three individual medals and an overall fourth-place team finish at the 2009 GTA Open on Saturday, November 7 in Ajax, Ont.

Leading the way for the Blues was third-year standout Shujon Mazumder. The Toronto native placed first in the men’s 54kg category. This is Mazumder’s second tournament win of the season, his first coming at the Toronto Open on Oct. 18 at the University of Toronto.

Earning a silver medal was fifth-year veteran Matt Fruchtman (Toronto) in the men’s 90kg event.

“It was a good tournament for me,” said Fruchtman. “I beat the wrestlers I knew I could beat and lost in the finals only to a very seasoned Guelph club wrestler. It shows me what I need to work on to get better.”

Head coach Mike Quinsey was impressed with Fruchtman’s performance:

“It was great to see Matt achieve a very respectable level of performance in competition. He wrestled at the top of his game and achieved a career high level of success.”

Rounding out the medal performances was John Feng’s (Scarborough, Ont.) third-place finish in the men’s 65kg category. Dene Ringuette also finished just off the podium with a fifth-place finish in the 76kg event.
