OTTAWA (CIS) – Quarterbacks Dan Brannagan of Queen’s and Michael Faulds of Western Ontario, both of whom could reach the 10,000-yard plateau this week, are among a number of standouts looking to resume their climb up the list of CIS football career leaders over the coming days.
Brannagan of Burlington, Ont., and Faulds of Eden Mills, Ont., both fifth-year seniors, currently sit in fourth and fifth place on the CIS all-time list with 9,642 and 9,628 passing yards, respectively.
McGill’s Matt Connell completed his university career last fall with a CIS-record 10,455 yards, making him the only member of the 10,000 Club. Former Hec Crighton trophy winner Ben Chapdelaine of McMaster ranks second in CIS history and holds the OUA mark of 9,974 yards, while former Ottawa pivot Josh Sacobie is third on the national list at 9,885.
Both Brannagan and Faulds will shatter the OUA record and break the 10,000-yard barrier this week should they maintain their 2009 season averages. Brannagan leads the nation averaging 376 passing yards per outing, while Faulds is second with 370 per contest.
No. 4-ranked Queen’s (5-0) visits Waterloo (1-4) on Saturday afternoon, while No. 5-Western (5-0) hosts York (0-5) in a rare Thursday night affair.
Not far behind the two OUA all-stars on the CIS list is fellow fifth-year veteran Justin Dunk of Guelph, who ranks seventh all-time with 9,093 yards through the air. Dunk could pass former Regina great Teale Orban (9,449) in sixth place Friday night when the No. 9-Gryphons (3-2) visit Ottawa (3-2).
A second-team all-Canadian a year ago, Brannagan is also the active leader among CIS pivots with 73 career touchdown passes, which is good for a tie for fourth place on the all-time list. Former three-time Hec Crighton winner Chris Flynn of Saint Mary’s holds the CIS mark of 87 passing majors, while Sacobie and Orban ended their careers with 79 and 76, respectively.
Faulds is the active leader with 1,123 passing attempts, good for fourth place on the CIS career list, and 680 completions, good for third position. Both totals are OUA records.
Connell holds the national mark in both categories (1,364 / 816), with former Hec Crighton recipient Greg Vavra of Calgary (1,200) and Orban (1,198) following in order in career attempts, and Orban sitting in second place with 685 completions, only five ahead of Faulds.
Kickers Rob Maver of Guelph and Justin Palardy of Saint Mary’s could also join a very select club this weekend as they are currently tied for sixth place in the CIS records book with 56 career field goals.
Only four players have split the uprights 60 times of more during their university days, including Western’s Frank Jagas (70), Jamie Boreham (68), who played at UBC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, UBC’s Shawn McIsaac (63) and McGill’s Anand Pillai (61). Former McMaster all-star Michael Ray (59) sits in fifth position.
While Maver is still 14 shy of Jagas’ OUA standard, Palardy’s next field goal will set an AUS record as he currently shares the conference mark with former StFX kicker Jadran Mlinarevic. No. 8-Saint Mary’s (3-1) visits Mount Allison (0-4) Saturday night.
At receiver, McGill’s Charles-Antoine Sinotte of Trois-Rivières, Que., is fifth on the CIS list with 180 catches, only 14 behind record holder and former teammate Erik Galas, but his Redmen enjoy a break in the QUFL schedule this week before hosting Saint Mary’s on Oct. 17.
Following are the CIS career leaders in major passing categories, as well as receptions, field goals, all-purpose touchdowns and scoring.
